A Nation of Fear

I weep for my country. They interviewed a farming family from Bumblefuck Iowa on NPR a few days ago and asked them what they're looking for in a presidential candidate. They were definitely voting Republican for the primary reason of fear. They had 2 great fears; America was just at a huge security risk from terrorism and that there was a great fear that our government was going to come into our homes and take our guns. I don't think I have ever heard any politician EVER say that they wanted to round up all of the guns in the country. I don't know where this straw man is being built that every little regulation that gets passed is just one step closer to a total gun ban, but obviously that fear is all too real for many Americans. What I found ironic is that outside of the Boston Bombings, every other act of terrorism that has happened since 9/11 has been accomplished with guns. I guess the other straw man out there is that if everyone owned a gun and carried it around 24/7 that there would be no crime or terrorism. If that were true and I were a terrorist, all I would do is throw some firecrackers into a crowd and then watch everyone shoot each other. I'm just sad to know that there is so much fear and suspicion out there. The person being interviewed had this palpable fear that America would be invaded if Hillary won the election. Maybe we have been at war for so long that it just doesn't feel natural to think about peace. We should be out there nuking Iran, not negotiating with them. We should kick North Korea in the ass just because we can. Do you sit at home and night and worry about America suddenly being attacked by anyone? I guess the terrorist HAVE won. We are a nation living in fear.
