We had ourselves a pretty nice weekend. On Saturday we drove up to Wildlife West since we hadn't been there in over a year. We were just so busy last year with travel and medical issues that we just never found the time to visit. With the garden remodel I was also short on disposable cash, so I didn't make my annual donation. We thought we would rectify the situation. So I wrote out a sizable check to help keep the place running for another year. Judging from what we saw, I hope there is another year. From what the manager told me and hinted at was that regulations are killing him. In the past it seemed like he was the go-to guy whenever the State had non-releasable wildlife that needed a home. It sounds like the USDA has really clamped down on small private zoos. There is so much red tape now involved in getting a permit to house wild animals. He had Mexican grey wolves which were a major draw, but they were just on loan. They were taken from him and brought to a wolf reproduction center that had the proper breeding facilities. He lost his foxes to age and disease. Only one raccoon survives and she spends most of her time hiding. About the only bright spots were 2 new mountain lion cubs which were just friggin' adorable. And then there was still Koshari the bear who I was able to feed peanut butter smeared dog biscuits to. I do love being able to get within a foot of a big, roly-poly, 500-lb black bear.
Sunday was our Memorial Day BBQ. We had 20+ furs show up for hamburgers and hot dogs. It was just a nice relaxing meet with friends.
Monday was recovery day. Many beers were consumed on Sunday.
