The Rio Chama Flight

I just flew the Rio Chama, and boy are my arms tired. *rimshot*

Yesterday was my 3rd flight to check out what the high flows have been doing. Yesterday it was a tour of the Rio Chama. The Chama is one of the major tributaries of the Rio Grande. It's also where we have our 2 most important dams that I control. Added to that, it's one of the most scenic rivers in the state. I was privileged to take a raft trip down the river several years ago. It is one of the most beautiful and relaxing trips I have ever been on. There are only a few Class III rapids you have to worry about, but they were pretty tame.

I took over 100 pics. It was a smooth flight. It was a little more fun and challenging than the previous flights since the river flows mainly in a canyon. It was so cool flying less than 100' over the treetops and suddenly the bottom drops out 500-1000' as we flew over the canyon rim. It was just like "Soaring" at Disneyland. And now what you have been waiting for.....PICS!

The area around Ghost Ranch. This area was made famous by the artist Georgia O'Keefe. It is such a pretty place.

Now that your appetite has been whet, I'll put the other pics behind links:

More of the Ghost Ranch area.

The Rio Chama Wild and Scenic River

El Vado Dam and reservoir

Where the Rio Chama enters El Vado Reservoir
The reservoir is only at 20% capacity. We're hoping to fill it by next month.

Heron Dam and reservoir
The reservoir is about 30% full. We're hoping to get it to at least 50% by the end of the year. All of the water is brought from under the Continental Divide in Colorado through a 20+ mile tunnel.

Downtown Albuquerque
My office is a low reddish orange building near the center, mostly covered by trees.
