Gas, Grass, or Ass.....Nobody Rides for Free!

I saw a little blurb on teh Interaweb about how tempers are rising as quickly as gas prices. I wonder how long it will be until we start hearing about rampant gas siphoning. That was a big problem during the 70's. I remember stories about people stealing gas from one another. Locking gas caps became a hot item. I have a funny story from that era.

It was 1974. My father took me to see Steven Spielberg's "Sugarland Express." We left the theater and there was a scraping noise coming from the back of the car. It looked like a metal strap was hanging down. We continued on home. About a half-mile from the theater the car dies. The gas gage is reading empty. My dad goes to call a service station for help. A short time later a tow truck arrives. My dad jokes to the driver that someone has probably stolen our gas. The driver notices gas on the street and looks underneath. He tells my dad, "Mister, they didn't steal your gas. They stole your whole tank!" How they did it without blowing up, I don't know. Someone must have really needed a gas tank from a 1972 Chevy Malibu!
