The Oscars

I have always liked watching the Academy Awards although I normally despise all awards shows. I prefer the Oscars since the votes are from peers as opposed to the general public. We have Peoples' Choice and Golden Globes for that.

This year I managed to see 3 of the 5 nominees for Best Picture. I had watched "Babel" on dvd that very morning. It reminded me too much of "Crash" which won last year. I also thought the whole Japanese segment was totally unnecessary. So I'm glad "The Departed" won since that would have been my choice. "Little Miss Sunshine" was a fine movie, but not Oscar worthy. It was this year's "Sideways." I was very happy to see Scorsese finally win for Best Director especially being flanked on stage by Spielberg, Coppola, and Lucas as he accepted the award. It was also a nice slap in the face to "Dreamgirls" which had 3 songs nominated but lost to Malissa Etheridge for her song from "The Inconvenient Truth." And kudos to Al Gore for winning Best Documentary (even though I haven't seen it yet.) It was good to see "Pan's Labyrinth" win a few awards for some of the technical categories. I was a bit surprised that "Cars" lost out to "Happy Feet." Both films were very good, but I though the plot in "Cars" was a little better. *shrugs* I had seen "The Devil Wears Prada" and "Half Nelson" which were up for Best Actress and Best Actor awards respectively. I need to add "The Queen" and "The Last King of Scotland" to my Netflix list, however, to see the winners in action. There were several nominations for "Little Children" so I think that should go in the ol' queue as well. I suppose I should also see "Letters from Iwo Jima" while it's still in the theaters. I was less than impressed, however, with its companion movie, "Flags of Our Fathers."

The awards show, itself, was one of the worst I can remember. Ellen is nice, but she doesn't have the charisma like a Billy Crystal. The opening montage was very lame. It was great to see the Polobulus Dancers onstage having just seen them live last week here in ABQ. I suppose it beats the bad old days when there were lame musical numbers happening all of the time. Still...the show dragged on for almost 4 hours! Zzzzzzz.
