I wrote about my tax drama a few months ago. I pride myself on being able to do my own taxes. This year there was a little complicating matter, and it took awhile for me to figure it out. I ended up owing a little to the feds and a LOT to New Mexico. I mailed off the check to the feds and decided to hold off on the state since I owed so much. The other day I get what I think is a savings bond in the mail. It looks different, though. I open up the envelope and pull out a check. A very large check. WTF?!? It says that I have overpaid my taxes and here is a refund. Huh? The only thing I can think of is that what I thought was taxable income, an inheritance from my father, was actually non-taxable. This is confusing since tax was already taken out before I even filed. I suppose a sharp accountant would have known what to do immediately, but little ol' me was clueless. It's kinda nice to know that the gov't is looking out for errors in my favor as well as errors in their favor. I'll have to look through my return to see if that was the case. If it is the case, then I will certainly not declare that income on my New Mexico return. That would eliminate the big amount I owe. It's not enough to fix the yard *laughs* but it is a nice little amount that would buy a few trees and bushes.
