The Monsoon Returns!

Most of you in the Midwest will probably say "STFU!" when I say that I'm glad it finally rained last night! This is supposedly the monsoon season here in the Southwest. This is the time of year when we get most of our precipitation. Warm, moist tropical air streams up from Mexico and we get nightly rain showers as the heat of the day causes that moisture to form storm clouds. Sometimes a high pressure system will set up, however, which pushes all of the moisture to the west or forces it to the east. That's what happened this year. The air has been hot and dry and it hasn't rained in weeks. Finally last night the skies opened up and we got a good soaking. There was also an incredible light show to go along with it. I saw some video on CNN of Chicago getting nailed with storms as well yesterday. Yeah, our light show looked a lot like what they got. It was most impressive! Unfortunately we had tickets for an Isotopes game. Like one of the last games we went to, we got rained out. Well, the game eventually continued after a long delay, but we said, "The hell with it!" after 30 minutes. By the time we were going to bed they were still in the 6th inning.

I'm off to spend a weekend with scruff_e_coyote hiking in Canyons of the Ancients National Monument. The area is supposed to contain the largest concentration of ancient pueblos in the Americas. It's a fairly new monument meaning there are few restrictions on where you can hike. This should be pretty interesting!
