The MFF '08 Con Report

On Sunday someone asked me, "So! Did you have a fun con?" My brain seized up at that moment. It's like a whole bunch of sub-routines in a program all worked fine by themselves, but when put together, it causes a crash. I guess I got hung up on the word "fun." Was it fun? I thought about the hours and hours I spent in con suite preparing food. I thought about hauling about a ton of supplies up on a series of elevators. Then I thought about bringing about a quarter of that back downstairs either to the Den or to pack out. I never made it to the art show. I never attended a panel. I fursuited for maybe 2 hours at the most. I spent about 10 minutes in the Dealers' Room. What the hell did I do all weekend?!? I drove 2,400 miles, spent $500 on a hotel room, and took several vacation days. For what?!? I pretty much worked the whole time! I had to be up every morning at 7 to get breakfast started. Was this "fun?!?" FUCK YEAH!

This con is like the Peace Corps to me. It's the toughest job I'll ever love. It's me giving a little back to the fandom I love so much. Even in all of the craziness and busyness of the weekend, there were still many golden moments. I missed out on so much, but I also gained a lot too.

I didn't spend a lot of time in the suite itself. I was more in the background getting things ready and prepared. This prevented me from getting a lot of face time with con attendees like in the past. I did, however, get to a deeper level of friendship for those on the staff, both the con suite and the overall MFF staff. It was wonderful working with folks like alexanderkatz, thefelinaferal, quasiskunk, kamiten, nevermint, kellic, benjimutt, scritchwuff, littlebluecolt, and stria_inbiri. Then there were those that helped out when asked like cadpigjr, rorydedog, and kumakehu. OMG! I hope I'm not forgetting anyone!

Then there was the MFF staff that kept us going like duncandahusky, takaza, darkwolph, and especially berin who got us hapless victims willing volunteers. You know you're working for and with good people when your efforts are realized and appreciated.

I should also say that this was ego-inflating con. There's nothing quite like hearing things from young furs who saw my "Yiff the Cook" apron and thanked me for having such an awesome con suite. I was grinning from ear to ear when folks I barely knew were actively seeking me out to meet me and chat. I was told that people actually like reading this LJ. I post interesting content. Really? Cool! I now know the feeling of wearing a truly awesome fursuit (Quewe) at a con instead of being looked down upon because I wore "just another Marylens." I literally scared a maid and sent her running as I walked down the hall. I was sweating like a fanboi in August but I was in heaven when I heard comments like, "That's fucking awesome!" and "You have got to be kidding! OMG!"

So all-in-all it was a very memorable experience. While I would have loved to have partied more, hung out and chatted, and just have done more furry things, it was a truly wonderful con. Thanks to everyone who helped make it so.
