Garden - 2010

I officially kicked off the 2010 gardening season yesterday by planting 2 mounds of zucchini and 2 mounds of cucumbers. I usually like to wait until May 1 to get things planted, but the weather forecast looked promising for the week. I'm not sure if the soil is warm enough yet, but we shall see. Sometime this week I plan on hitting up either Home Despot or Wally World to get seedlings. The plan right now is to get 4 bell peppers, 4 poblano chiles, 4 green chiles, 4 jalapenos, 4 tomatoes, and 4 eggplant. If there's any room left over I'll throw in some green beans. Let the gardening begin!

I should also mention that I won the war against the cholla cactus over the weekend. People who use cactus in landscaping need to be beaten with sticks! Unless you're using it for a natural barrier, you're a sadist for planting this stuff! I have been whittling down the plant for months now. Finally I got it down to just a stump of prickly branches. I then dug a hole around the entire thing with the hopes of undercutting it. Last week I succeeded in getting it knocked over. It was still heavy as anything, so I attacked the root ball with high pressure water. With all of the soil knocked off it it, it lost a lot of weight. I was finally able to get the whole thing out of the ground where I could hack up the stump into manageable pieces. The ultimate goal is to construct a fire pit where the cactus once stood.
