Does It Matter?

I love having little conversations inside my head when I go for walkies. The other day it was extremely hot, and it felt almost like my body had to be forced through the oppressive air. It was then that I started wondering about the very nature of being. My body was made up of atoms as was the air I was moving through. What kept my atoms together as a human as opposed to having my atoms simply becoming one with the air I was walking through. OK. There are different atoms, but on a sub-atomic level, there are protons, neutrons, and electrons. Then of course there are the even smaller particles. Those particles are all the same, aren't they? Is there such a thing as a carbon electron or an oxygen neutron, or are neutrons neutrons and protons protons? If so, then what dictates how those particles come together to form what we call matter? What causes gold to be gold and lead to be lead? Was this something that was dictated at the beginning of the universe?

I then took it to the geek level and wondered if what we consider "magic" would be the ability to completely control atomic particles to do whatever you wished to happen? Am I interpreting Einstein's formula correctly that matter can be converted to energy and energy into matter? Of course it would take an unimaginable amount of energy to create matter, but then there is a lot of energy in the universe. I suppose the better question would be if I should start taking mind-altering substances when contemplating stuff like this or whether I should just drink more and kill those nasty brain cells.
