Chasing The Chief
I found a fun way to get a little exercise at work. The eastbound Southwest Chief leaves the ABQ station at 12:10. That's right during my lunch time. It's only a block or 2 to the tracks from the office, so I take a little walk to some vantage point and watch it depart as it heads towards Chicago. The Amtrak website has a "train tracker" which shows the locations of its trains and if they are running on time. If they're on time, I head out the door with just enough time to get to a good location. If it's running late, I can walk down to the station and see it there (although the whole train/bus transit center tends to be a scary place at any hour of the day). I've also decided to bring my camera along to get some shots from various locations. Here are the first 2.
4/21/14 From the 1st floor of the Convention Center parking garage.
4/24/14 From Lomas Blvd. There used to be an abandoned tire store at this location, but they razed it last month.
The train consist is the same every day; 2 P42's, a baggage car, 3 sleepers, diner, lounge, and 3 coaches. I'm hoping to see some variation now and then like a private car tacked on to the end or an extra engine on its way to Chicago for service.
