Like most people I was shocked and saddened to hear about Robin Williams' passing yesterday especially since it appears to be by his own hand. Just a couple of weeks ago I sat down and watched "Mrs Doubtfire" and "Good Will Hunting" since they were being shown on cable. I even commented how much he deserved the Oscar for "Good Will" since he gave such a strong performance. Since I'm an old fart, I first became aware of him in his appearances on "Happy Days" as Mork and then when his character was spun off into its own show. That was "must see tv" for a kid in those days. Of course the show jumped the shark when it brought in Jonathan Winters, but was interesting to have 2 manic comedians from different generations on the same show. It was almost too much of a good thing. And that pretty much summed him up. Whenever he was on Letterman it was like watching an otter on cocaine. His early stand-up stuff was funny (and dirty) and really set the bar high for his fellow comedians. I will say that outside of a few performances, I never really liked most of his movies, except the ones I already mentioned. "Good Morning, Vietnam?" Meh. "Fisher King?" Hated it. "World According to Garp?" Pass. I do, however, think that every fursuiter needs to watch "Death to Smoochy." It was probably a movie critics hated, but it makes me laugh every time I watch it. So that's how I'll remember him, as Rainbow (Fucking) Randolph. Kids love him!
