2015 Oscar-Nominated Animated Shorts

It's that time of year again for our local art-house cinema to show the nominations in the more obscure categories for the Academy Awards. I say this every year that these categories are my favorites because they are little gems that most people never see, but can carry a big creative punch. Here are this year's nominees:

"The Bigger Picture" (UK) Trailer found here. It was probably my least favorite entry. Perhaps it had great artistic value, but it fell pretty flat to me.

"The Dam Keeper" (US) Clip found here. Full movie is available online but you have to register at a website to see it. This is my choice for winner. An anthro pig holds back the tide of darkness and death but is ruthlessly bullied until he finds a soulmate in a caring fox. It gets points for not only being furry but for having a really nice story.

"Feast" (US) Trailer found here. Disney's entry this year. Nice story. Nice animation. But it's Disney. Would you expect anything less? I was surprised that Disney won last year, but I don't think it will pull it out this year with "The Dam Keeper" in the running. We shall see.

"Me and My Moulton" (Norway) Trailer found here. Cute story. Basic animation. Meh.

"A Single Life" (Netherlands) Trailer found here Very funny and very short film about what happens when a woman's life gets tied to a 45 record. Hint: Don't let it get to the end!

There were also 4 honorable mentions:

Bus Story From Canada.

"Duet" (full movie)

"Sweet Cocoon" 'making of' video here

"Footprints" From veteran animator Bill Plympton
