"Darkness at Noon"
After I had finished reading "Naked Lunch" I went to the library website to choose my next book. I totally blanked. I thought of a couple of titles, but they were either checked out or not available at my branch. I really wanted to read something over the weekend but I couldn't find anything. And then I had my "Well, duh!" moment. Why not go back to the place that got me started on this whole Summer Reading program in the first place several years ago? I consulted the list of the 100 greatest novels of the 20th century. I finally found a title that was on the list and available at my branch. So I spent the weekend reading "Darkness at Noon." I had never heard of the title before nor the author, but I was pleasantly surprised. It's a fictional account of an old school Communist who is thrown into a Russian prison because he finds out that revolutions tend to eat their fathers. His workers' Utopia is now a totalitarian dictatorship, and old ideas must be purged. As far as I know it has never been made into a movie, but it has been adapted as a stage play. I could totally see that since there are so few characters but the interplay between them would easily translate to the stage. So now I have my blueprint for future reading. I will use the list to aid me in future literary choices.
