Kitty and I kept up our tradition of watching the Oscars last night. I made a pizza from scratch and we settled in to watch the festivities. Yeah, it's a long boring awards show, but we do love our movies. We were especially interested in the small categories since we had seen all of the nominees. "Piper" won best animated short which means there is no bias towards the big studios, Pixar in this case. "Zootopia" was the big furry winner of the night. Once again, no bias towards the big studios. And my "Jewish Conspiracy Theory" was shot down in the Best Short Documentary category with "The White Helmets" beating out "Joe's Violin." "Sing" won for Best Live-Action Short which was very much deserved. I was also a bit shocked to see that the OJ documentary that I had previously written about won! I'm not sure why it wouldn't have been nominated for an Emmy instead since it was on TV, but oh well! We hadn't seen "La La Land," "Moonlight," nor "Manchester By The Sea," so we can't say how deserving they were.
Yes, we were watching at the ending. It was probably one of the most fucked up things I have seen in my decades of watching the show. The only thing that came close was when a very senile and decrepit Sir Laurence Olivier came out to announce Best Picture back in the early 80's and just screamed out "Amadeus!" without reading the list of nominees. I was going to blame Warren Beatty for the fuckup since he appeared drunk. Looking again at the video it seems that he was simply a deer in the headlights when confronted with the wrong envelope. It was Faye Dunaway who just blurted out the wrong name. Either way it was interesting to see such a major mistake for such a major award show.
