Back around 2002 I discovered KBAC, a radio station out of Santa Fe that got a repeater to carry its signal to ABQ. They played a great eclectic mix that featured a lot of singer/songwriters that I had never heard before. One of them was Shawn Colvin. I loved her music! Many of her hits seemed to come from a single album, "A Few Small Repairs." A bought the cd and LOVED it! It seems I was always including a song from that cd whenever I was doing one of my famous late-night mixes. The cd had earned her a couple of Grammy's in 1998, so it was a pretty big deal. So imagine my delight when I found out that she would be performing in ABQ at a historic theater in downtown. The venue was very small and comfortable. We were in the 2nd to last row, but that still put us only 13 rows from the stage. I kept thinking that it was probably pretty close to how it would feel to hear a band play on "Saturday Night Live." The opening act was a husband and wife team of Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams. He was an outstanding guitar player and I looked up his pedigree. He has played with Bob Dylan, Phil Lesh, Paul Simon, BB King, KD Lang, and a whole bunch more. It turned out that he was Shawn's guitarist as well and his wife was her backup vocalist. The tour was to celebrate the 20th anniversary of "A Few Small Repairs" and so she played the entire album track by track. It was wonderful! She interspersed stories of writing the album throughout the concert. The audience had a great time teasing her because her guitars needed constant tuning due to the low humidity and high altitude. Ah, the bane of musicians who play in the high desert.
