I have been in the fandom for just about 3 years now. I have met a huge group of wonderful friends and want to both meet more and keep the ones I already have. It will take a little time to really get to know some of you. If we see each other once a year, it's pretty tough to have a great deal of familiarity. I will certainly try my best, however, to get to know you on a more personal level.
One other thing to note is that I mainly know people through their LJ names. If your badge has a name that you use on furryMuck or Second Life or it's the name of your fursuit, I might not recognize you right away. I know I met one fur at AC who I had know idea who he was. Who was this Carmine guy? Oh! bikerwalla! Sure! That's a name I can relate to!
Fursuiters represent a special problem. The suit and the person are 2 different entities. Many of us get to know each other while interacting in suit. What happens when we meet in the hallway out of suit? What if the suit has one name and the performer has another? I'm as guilty as the next guy with this one. I'm Sabot but I can also be Nevada, Zuni, or Abbey. And there are times when I will loan out a suit to someone else. It could be Kitty performing in Abbey as well as myself. Perhaps I'm giving a new suiter his/her first chance in suit at a con.
AC is a lousy place to meet new people. If you know almost no one and the person you meet doesn't know anyone either, you might form a good friendship. If you go to a con and want to hook up with 10 people, you must remember that each of those 10 people might want to meet 10 different people themselves. There were way too many "Hi! Great to see you again! Hey! I gotta run!" at AC, but that was the nature of the beast. Perhaps that's why I like to throw room parties as opposed to going to dances. It's a page I borrowed from the book of cons according to Mr Cougar and Furrysparkles: If you want to meet me, I will either be in place A or place B. You miss out on a lot, but you also have a greater chance of hooking up with the people you really want to meet.
