Bear on a Bike '08

Every year I make this post so I can document the first day that I ride my to work. Last year it was May 15, so I'm getting a 2 week jump this year. Unlike last year, however, this year's 1st ride kicked my ass. My tail was dragging during the last couple of miles. Time-wise I'm still right in the 40-50 minute range, so the ride didn't take that much longer. It was just that my legs were getting really tired. It's probably a combination of a few extra pounds on my gut as well as another year in age. Hopefully I'll be flying down the trail in a few weeks after I get in better shape.

On the naturalist front, I noticed that it was around mid-May last year that the mesa exploded in wildflowers. I doubt that it will happen again this year. Perhaps I'm just a bit early, but I don't see the plants that produced the flowers growing either. So far I have only found wild rhubarb growing in any abundance. Last year the mesa was covered in purple scorpionweed and white spectacle pod. Nothing like that this year. I have noticed some globe mallow flowering which is interesting because it was one of the last bloomers last year. I'll continue to keep an eye out for interesting developments in what nature is doing up there.
