Happy No-More-Political-Ads Day!

I'm glad to see so many of my LJ friends excited about voting. I did the deed a couple of weeks ago, so I can just sit back and watch everyone else in line. It's great to see democracy in action. I'll be sitting in front of the tube tonight after 8 to see the results pouring in. I had thought about doing a shot for every state Obama wins, but tomorrow is a work day and I don't want to get too smashed.

I guess I wanted to throw my 2 cents out there about this latest attack the Republicans are using. The evil word of the day is "socialism." I guess they got tired of using the word "liberal" as if it were something to be avoided at all costs. There is no way that we should "spread the wealth." Oh hell no! Wait. Wasn't Robin Hood considered a hero? What's mine is mine and everyone else should just fuck off! I'm all right, Jack. Keep your hands off of my stack.

Of course everyone wants to keep as much money that they earn in their own pockets. I do, however, think that there is a "greater good" to which we should all contribute. We have seen that unbridled capitalism doesn't work just like communism doesn't. Perhaps there is something in the middle that is better for all of us. The system we have is not perfect. Why not tweak it a bit to make things better for all of us? Why not have the top 10% pay a little more to benefit 90% and in doing so make us a stronger country? I'm not talking about going back to a welfare state. That didn't work either. But how about money for capital improvements? A better health care system? Better education?

I'm really sick and tired of hearing that patriotism means running around with a big foam rubber finger yelling "We're #1! We're the greatest!" Oh really? We're the greatest? While we're better than a lot, we're definitely not the greatest. We definitely have the potential, but it seems to be squandered. Do we have the best schools? No. Do we have the highest standard of living? No. Are we the wealthiest? No. We DO have a kick ass military with nukes. Ah! That must make us the greatest. And we can kick the shit out of little countries like Iraq and Afghanistan. Oh wait.

So according to Republicans what I just wrote means I hate America. Fuck you. I love this country and would not want to live anywhere else. I do agree with Biden that paying taxes is patriotic. Any nation needs money to keep itself going. Taxes provide services for everyone's benefit. No one wants to see money squandered, but it seems that many times it's once again greed that causes money to disappear instead of providing valuable services.

So I hope Obama wins today. I'll give him a chance. I truly believe this country has seen one of the most corrupt and bungling administrations in decades. We survived! I hope Obama is truthful in wanting to improve the conditions of this country. If not, there will be another election in 4 years. If Congress screws up, there will be another election in 2 years. THAT is what makes this country great.
