"Milk" -- review

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. I know that a lot of Oscar contenders will probably be in the running over the next week, and Sean Penn will definitely be in the race. I remember quite well when the real Harvey Milk was assassinated and his killer used "The Twinkie Defense" to get off with a slap on the wrist for double murder. At the time all I knew about Milk was that he was openly gay. I was 13 at the time so I had no idea about San Francisco, Castro Street, or the gay rights movement. I am hoping that the movie accurately portrayed the times. It felt so real to me that I am hoping they didn't take liberty with the facts. One thing that stood out in my mind is that the religious right has been at their shit for over 30 years. Now we have Prop 8. Then there was Prop 6. Granted, the hate of Prop 6 would have affected the rights of gays much more that Prop 8, but the same message of hate and intolerance was there. I now know why Anita Bryant is one of the most hated people out there. There's no doubt about her hatred for the gay-rights agenda because the movie used actual news footage from the times. Overall it's an outstanding bio-pic. I could hear many people crying in the theater towards the end. The news footage of the candlelight vigil on the Castro held after his death had me tearing up as well. If you're gay and want to learn more about the early days of the movement, see this film.
