OK. Now the backstory.
The New Mexico State Penitentiary was one of the more infamous prisons in the US. It was the scene of one of the most brutal riots in US history back in 1980. If you want to read the whole story about the riots, here is the Wikipedia article about it. In "Pulp Fiction" they use the line "get a blowtorch and go Medieval on your ass." During the riots, that actually happened. The prison stayed open for about 9 years after the riot and then was closed down. Newer facilities were constructed nearby. The prison was not torn down and part of it is now used as a movie set. Probably the most famous movie so far has been the Adam Sandler re-make of "The Longest Yard." They will be filing "The Book of Eli" starring Denzel Washington starting this week. We're going to have to rent "Felon" which was also filmed there.
As I mentioned, only part of the prison is used for filming. The rest is in its original state, slowly succumbing to the elements. We had an opportunity to get in with a group that would be taking a tour of the facility. It turned out that the "tour" was basically, "we'll open up the door and give you complete reign into any area with unlocked doors. See you in a few hours." So we explored as much of the old buildings as possible. This included going down into the basements where if you were freaked out by "Silent Hill" you would be wetting your pants. Of course we toured the cell block where the worst of the riots happened. Yes, as shown in the Wikipedia article, there are still marks in the floor where inmates were hacked to bits with an axe, and yes, the floor is still blackened where an inmate was burned to death by a blowtorch. His cell is adorned with murals full of Bible quotes. If you are into the whole "paranormal thing," the place is just loaded with bad vibes. It shouldn't be too hard to believe since the place is just filled with evil based on past events. The ex-guard who was our "tour guide" very graphically described the daily violence in the place. During his tenure dozen of people were stabbed or beaten to death. Can you think of a better place to fursuit?
Since we knew we would have some time to explore on our own, xeltifon and I decided to bring our fursuits. I thought we could get a few shots of us in cells and such. I had no idea they had an execution chamber at the prison. So good taste thrown aside, we fursuited it. It was literally "gallows humor." So now the bar has been set. We have been thinking about other places where fursuiting would be wholly inappropriate. I think we have set the standard until someone does Auschwitz.
Pics or it didn't happen? OK.
( More pics behind cut. May not be SFW due to comic simulation of prison sexCollapse )
