The Making of a Foodie

When I was growing up my mom cooked very simple meals. When I think back to all of the dishes that she made I can only come up with very homey dishes e.g. meat loaf, spaghetti and meatballs, etc. Let's just say that she was definitely not the adventurous type. Even when we went out to eat my dad had his favorite restaurant at the time and we ALWAYS ate there. About as adventurous as he would get was a Jewish deli that served wonderful corned beef and pastrami sandwiches with all the dill pickles you could eat.

I was also a very finicky child growing up. I hated all condiments like ketchup, mustard, and mayo. I would pitch a fit if the various foods touched on my plate. Yeah. I was pretty OCD.

I'm not sure what clicked in me, but after a certain point EVERYTHING suddenly seemed very tasty to me. There was nothing I wouldn't try. I started seeking out exotic flavors. Thai, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, Indian, etc, I loved them all!

So now I'm at a place where I love to try new and exotic things. They may end up as failures, but 9 times out of 10 I add a new recipe to my repertoire. Since my garden has been pretty prolific this year, it has forced me to try new things. One of the crops that has been very good this year has been eggplant. Here is another vegetable that I never tasted until just a few short years ago. Eggplant Parmesan and Ratatouille have already become favorites. It was time to expand my horizons once more.

A few years ago not too far from my office a Mediterranean Restaurant opened up with wonderful authentic dishes. I let my adventurous side out and tried many of the dishes on the menu. One that I found very tasty was baba ganoush which was essentially pureed eggplant. Tonight I decided to try my paw at making it. Thanks to teh Interawebs I found many recipes. I picked one that looked good and made it. Allah Akbar! It turned out pretty damned tasty! It just makes me so happy to try something new and have it turn out so tasty! I really love this experimenting thing! Sorry, mom! My tastes have grown and my sense of adventure has blossomed. No more fried baloney for me unless I feel nostalgic.
