Several days ago I commented to a friend's post about the earthquake in northern California. I said something like "I'm amazed that there was so little damage. If this had been in the 3rd world, the death toll would have been in the thousands." Well, it looks like my comment is now ringing true. Haiti was barely surviving as is and now it gets hit with a massive quake. It really was a triple-play of doom; a massive quake, it was shallow, it was very near the largest city. Toss in things like it was mid-day and constructions standards were sub-par and we're looking at a massive loss of life. I have no idea how high the death toll will climb, but I wouldn't be surprised to hear numbers in the 10's of thousands. This will definitely be a horrific unfolding drama over the next few days.
