A Classic Mascot Schtick

Hooray for October! 'Tis the season for Children's Water Festivals! This is the time of year when I get paid outrageous sums of money to fursuit for work as Otto Otter! Today's crowd was a bit extreme. The highs were higher and the lows were lower. It was a VERY huggy group which was a good thing, but the bad kids seemed to be VERY bad in terms of tail pulling, punching, and whisker yanking. Overall it was a great experience especially since I got to perform a classic mascot maneuver.

At lunch time the kids went out onto Civic Plaza, our big open-air park in the center of downtown. On one end is a stage. On the the other end is a fountain. While the kids were eating lunch around the whole plaza, I strutted out into the center of the plaza. Someone shouted "Otto!" which was my cue to look around all puzzled to see where it came from. I then continued. Someone else shouted, "Otto!" I looked around with my paw to my ear. I continued. Soon more kids were shouting my name. Finally I recognized one kid in particular and headed for him/her. That got the kids on the other side of the plaza all excited, so they shouted even louder. I headed for them. That made the kids on the other side upset, so they shouted even louder. I turned around and headed for them. Hook set! Now I had both sides of the plaza shouting my name as I headed for either side. I felt like a pro-team mascot trying to whip up the crowd into a frenzy. It's indescribable hearing your character's name being chanted by a couple hundred kids. Finally some girls ran up to me and pounced me. They dragged me to their side of the plaza which made the other side yell even louder. I eventually broke away to give the other side some attention. Once again, as in previous years, someone had to ask for an "Otto-graph" which set off a landslide of name signing. So despite being poked, punched, and prodded, it felt like Heaven waving to the buses as they departed, hearing things like, "You're so cool, Otto!" and "We love you!" *sigh* That's what it's all about!
