I started hosting a big annual furmeet at my den way back in 2003. At that time I was always hoping to meet new furs in the state. We were a small group, but it always seemed tough to get everyone together. At that time it seemed that the Socorro group was much larger and they DID have regular gaming nights. As time went on the furmeet got bigger and bigger. Like the fandom as a whole, the local furry community kept growing and growing. The more people joined, the more outlets opened up to get the word out that there was a thriving and active furry community to be found. I definitely didn't want to happen what I had heard happened in another city where 2 completely separate furry groups developed because neither knew the other existed. An effort has also been made to cross-pollinate the various geek groups in the area. There are many avid gamers that feel right at home during a furmeet. The same can be said about the local sci-fi groups. As I had posted earlier we have tried to have a presence at the local sci-fi con and have received a pretty warm welcome.
Tomorrow will be the big furmeet. I bought a bunch of hot dogs and hamburgers at Costco yesterday. Judging from earlier meets, we should have an abundance of food since we have a very generous group. There will be a few out-of-staters as well which makes me very happy. I have received several RSVP's from furs who just found out that there were "others like them" out there. Some are nervous about being social and actually meeting other furs. I hope they will leave the party feeling welcomed and loved and perhaps with the contact information of people they have met.
We're right on the cusp of being too big for a house but too small for a hotel. We'll just have to see how things go. I am a control freak and I love to be able to not worry about hotel security or the financial burdens of renting a space. Once again, we'll just have to wait and see how many folks show up. It's a labor of love and I have a bunch of great friends who can help me pull it off. A report will definitely follow on Sunday or Monday!
