"The Tree of Life"

I had read reviews of this movie several months ago and had no real desire to rent it. The reviews were essentially that you will either find it a cinematic masterpiece or a pretentious piece of crap. I guess I'll vote for the latter. I'm not a big fan of Terrence Malick's films. I was not impressed with "The Thin Red Line" when it came out several years ago. I sort of liked "Badlands" but he released that one almost 30 years ago. Prolific he definitely is not. Maybe that's a good thing.

It's up for Best Picture, but I certainly don't know why. Malick is up for Best Director which I think is a gift only because so many Hollywood insiders seem to love the guy. It's also up for Best Cinematography where it night have a chance. The movie is packed with beautiful nature imagery, but if I had wanted a movie about nature, I would have rented a nature documentary. As I had mentioned in an earlier post, I'm all about the plot and story. This one kinda had one, but it was buried so deeply amongst the imagery that it was almost lost. This is the type of movie that hipsters go to see and then spend hours talking about it at the coffee shop. Kitty's review was, "Tree of life?!? More like tree of fail!"
