I'm back at the old grindstone today after a wonderful weekend with Scruff at the Canyon. I had planned on making the morning of my departure a fairly lazy affair. I woke up around 6:30 just as the Sun was rising. I just turned over to get a another half hour or hour of sleep when I was jolted awake by the sound of a bull elk bugling right outside of Scruff's apartment. It's hard to describe what the call is like. It's part train whistle, part screaming woman. I peered out of the screen door on the balcony to see a set of massive antlers pass by. There was no going back to sleep after that. It was probably a good thing because by the time I packed and had breakfast it was after 8. It was then a 6-hour drive back to ABQ. Hopefully Scruff can get a position there again next year and we can re-create "Grand Can Con" with Al and Dex (and any others) like we did in '06.
