I spent quite a bit of the weekend cleaning up after last week's storms. The main task was to build the diversion channel to funnel future floods out into the street and away from the yard. I had made arrangements with the neighbor to help him construct a ditch in back of his property which would connect to a channel I had already dug. Well, he was highly motivated and dug his own channel. The next order of business was to get the accumulated sediment away from our back walls. We found out that they were simple block walls and not to be used as retaining walls. That was not good news since we had 4'+ of sand pushing against the walls. Any future flooding events could cause the walls to collapse which is what happened to the neighbor 2 doors down who ended up with 100+ tons of debris in his back yard. So my neighbor and I spent several hours digging out our walls. Not only will it take the pressure off but also provide yet another line of defense in stopping water/mud from flowing into the yard. I still have a lot of digging to do, but it was a good start. I'm just waiting to get scolded by the Park Service for doing stuff on their land. *shrugs* I'm just giving them back their sediment.
