Alumnus Moment

Made it to mom's today. I had plans of touring all around southern Illinois, but instead I pared things down and just had a nice walk around the SIU campus in Carbondale. I went down to my old TA office in the basement of the geology building. It's even more dank, dark, and depressing than 15 years ago! There have been massive changes to the campus including the removal of a parking structure, the relocation of the football stadium, and the construction of a big new shiny building right out in front of the Geo building. Times certainly have changed! The library has it's own bistro! WTF?!? There's also a huge Starbucks in the student union.

I also paid a visit to the 2 places I lived while I was a grad student. One whole trailer park is completely gone. The other park is still there, but my trailer is no more. *cries* I must say that my 2 years there were not the fondest memories of my academic career. I would have liked to have seen my field areas as planned, especially since my thesis was about land use changes, and I'm sure the landscape/vegetation has changed significantly after 20 years. Oh well. I'm sure there will be many more road trips to Chicago over the next several years.

BTW...I had an "Old Bear is old!" moment today. As I was walking across the campus today, I realized that most of the students that were passing me by weren't even born when I was the one walking to class.
