Otter Time

I have spent the past 2 days performing as Otto Otter. It was a slightly different format than I have been used to in terms of the number of 4th graders I had the opportunity to interact with. In previous years certain schools were granted permission to attend which were then rotated in future years. Of course that meant that half of the 4th graders never had the opportunity to attend because, of course, the next year they would be 5th graders. This year they wanted to ALL 4th graders to attend. So instead of kids getting 5 classes in water conservation, they got 3. But the trade-off was that ALL kids got at least 3 instead of half getting none.

So I didn't have a lot of time to build up a relationship with the kids, but that didn't seem to matter. I welcomed as many of the kids as possible and said good-bye to as many kids as possible. That was enough to have a group of girls develop a chant of O-T-T-E-R. It was also enough to warrant a hug from one classmate which then opened the floodgate for everyone to want a hug. There were lots of high 4's and fist bumps. Wading out into a sea of a few hundred 4th graders is both terrifying and electrifying. In the end I kept my tail attached and my head and paws firmly in place. I came home completely exhausted but with a huge grin on my muzzle. Mission accomplished.
