I Love/Hate the IRS

It seems that every year there is some drama regarding my taxes. This year is no exception. I knew I would be getting a refund thanks to now being able to filed a "married" return with Kitty. So I mailed off the return as soon as I could in March. Right around Tax Day I received a letter from the IRS saying that there was a problem with my return. It seems that I forgot to answer a question on Line 26 on a certain form. It was a simple "yes" or "no" question. I hadn't answered it because I had answered "yes" to question 25 which then told me to skip all of the other questions and go right to Line 31. So I called the IRS to ask them "WTF?!?" After 30 minutes on hold and another 30 minutes talking with a representative, the solution they offered was, "Just send the form back in." *headdesk* The worst part was the "expect a response within 6 to 8 weeks." 2 months?!? Oy! Almost right on schedule I received another letter from them a couple of days ago. Now what?!? It appears that I hadn't calculated the amount of tax I owed correctly. My refund was almost double what I was expecting. WHAT?!? They tried to show me where I had made my mistake, but the limited information they provided was of no use. All of the numbers they showed exactly matched the ones I had used. So I have no idea what happened, but if they want to return more of my money back to me, who am I to complain? The one point this does illustrate, however, is just how fucked up the IRS is and the whole Income Tax system as well. I like to think that I'm a pretty smart guy. I do math on a daily basis. It's part of my job. I'm careful to make sure that all the calculations are correct. So if this process is so complicated for someone like myself, how is the Average Joe out there supposed to navigate this mathematical minefield?!? *insert conspiracy theory here about how Intuit and H&R Block give huge donations to Congress to keep the tax system as complicated as possible*
