A Good Day at Work

I decided to participate in a little boondoggle yesterday. One of our new people had asked about touring the Bosque del Apache Wildlife Refuge since it's at the bottom of our system. All of the water that gets diverted eventually ends up at the wildlife refuge where they use the water to flood up fields for ducks and migrating cranes and geese. I had seen the refuge in the past, but thought I would tag along for no better reason than to get the hell out of the office to enjoy the outdoors. The last time I toured the refuge I saw quite a bit of wildlife besides birds. It was also in the summer when all of the migrating birds had already flown the coop (so to speak). The migration season is definitely ending. They said that they had 30,000 snow geese a few weeks ago and now its down to 300. We saw a nice flock of wild turkeys and the males were starting to strut their stuff in preparation for mating season. Unfortunately we didn't see many mammals except for a small herd of mule deer. Someone supposedly spotted a javelina, but it quickly scurried away. The weather was absolutely gorgeous with bright sun and highs in the upper 60s. I just consider trips like this a little perk of the job. They're few and far between, but greatly appreciated.
