Oscar Nominated Shorts - Live-Action

This is one of my favorite categories. You try to get as much punch into a film/story in a short period of time. This year's crop was very good. It will be hard to pick a winner.

"Dekalb Elementary" - This one hit a bit hard given the events of last week. A young gunman walks into a school with the hope of going out in a blaze of glory with the police. A receptionist talks him down from the precipice. The angst was palpable in the theater with the news of another school shooting so fresh in everyone's minds. A possible winner.

"My Nephew Emmett - In 1950's Mississippi a black teen whistles at a white woman. It's 1950's Mississippi. What do you expect to happen? You know the outcome won't be good. Very powerful and based on a true story. A strong candidate for a winner.

"The Silent Child" - A family of a deaf girl hires a tutor to get the girl to speak and be more "normal." The mother wants more lip reading but the girl thrives with sign language which upsets the mother. A bit preachy for my tastes. Of all of the nominees, it was our least favorite.

"Wata Wote" = A bus in Kenya is hijacked by Al Shabaab terrorists who want to execute all non-Muslims on board. The Muslims on the bus conceal the identity of those passengers. Also based on a true story. A good film!

"The Eleven O'clock" - Who says all of the entries have to be heavy dramas? It's the one comedy of the bunch that could have been a Monty Python sketch. A psychiatrist has an appointment to treat a delusional man who thinks he is a psychiatrist. Who is who?!? Brilliant!

I'll do a post about the short documentaries in a few days. It would have been a 3-hour marathon if we had gone to te theater, but we found all of the entries that we could enjoy at home. Stay tuned!
