Getting My Claws Dirty

The weather forecast was for great weather for the next week, so I decided that it was time to get the garden fully planted. Usually May 1 is a safe bet for planting but some even wait until Mother's Day. I was also heartened to see that the lettuce, radishes, and beets that I had planted the weekend before were starting to sprout. It was time to go all-in. I planted 2 rows of green beans and 2 rows of corn (courtesy of albear). I went to the nursery and got 5 tomato plants and 16 chiles (8 poblano and 8 anaheim). Those went in along with 4 mounds of cucumbers (pickle time! or "I'm Pickle Bear!"), a mound of zucchini, and a mound of cantaloupe. What I hate about my "soil" is that when it gets really dry, weird things happen with surface tension. I could have a puddle form, wait a minute, dig down an inch, and it would be bone dry. So I have to get the soil really saturated, dig it up to get the moisture into the soil, and then repeat until I get a nice consistent texture. Now the trick will be to keep the cats out. I see a garden. They see a huge litter box. At least I won't have to worry about Mesa this year. He saw the garden as a bed of nice cool dirt in which to make a puppy nest.
