Obligatory Oscar Post

I have a pretty good history of Oscar telecasts here on LJ because I think I have posted about them every year since 2004. There was a streak there a few years ago when the first sentence was "worst show evar!" Last night's show was not bad. There was a hoo-hah about not having a host, but I didn't miss it. There was also a push to keep the show at 3 hours. That failed. They tried to keep acceptance speeches short. That kinda worked. I really want to beat some people over the head when they get up there and even if they have something prepared, they turn into mumbling fools. And now we have a new high tech faux pas. Don't put you speech on your cell phone which you have to turn on and scroll to find it. Also, if more than one person wins an award, don't hog the mic for the entire time! At least give the other people a few seconds to give THEIR thanks.

It was really a mixed bag for winners. I haven't seen most of the nominees yet. I'm glad Spike Lee won for screen play and not for director. I'm sure he will be fuming that for the 2nd time he lost to a movie about a white person and a black person in a car. I did see "BlackKKlansman" a few weeks ago and it was good, but not great. Thanks to Netflix I did see "Roma" and was happy to see its director bring home that prize. In terms of the short movies we saw, I was disappointed to see that "Bao" won for Best Animated. I was a bit disappointed that "Skin" won for Best Live-Action, but the more I thought about it, my negative bias was probably due to it being the last film we saw in that ultra-depressing field which I wrote about a couple of weeks ago. I was happy that "Period. End of Sentence" won for Best Documentary Short. I was a little surprised that "Free Solo" beat out "RBG" for Best Documentary, but then again I heard it was very good. My prediction of "Won't You Be My Neighbor" being nominated was wrong, and thankfully so. I was very shocked to see that "First Man" beat out both "Infinity War" and "Black Panther" for visual effects. Now I wanna see it! And now that the Oscars are over, I hope there is a flood of the nominees/winners coming out on Netflix over the next few months.
